Coastal Dune Systems in Haast, Westland on the South Island, New Zealand
ABSTRACT
The combination of aeolian, coastal, and seismic activity in the Haast region is a very unique phenomenon that creates a landscape of a kind that is not found anywhere else in the world. The seismic activity in the Southern Alps sends large loads of sediment down through the large braided streams in the area such as the Haast and the Okuru, the sediment is then very susceptible to aeolian and coastal processes after being deposited. The mix of these two erosional processes makes the area a great chronological marker for large seismic events in the Southern Alps.
