Over one million avalanches occur throughout the world each year. These avalanches are not a hazard until people and property are involved. Thousands of avalanches occur in the United States alone, with people dying as a result. The number of people affected is increasing as more people head to the backcountry slopes for recreation. By taking proper precautions and being aware of the signs to watch for, many of these accidents can be avoided.
