Lesson Plan Summary
Enhanced Podcasting in the Classroom
This project is designed for an eighth grade class at the culmination of unit on poetry. Students will be reading some of what they feel is their best work from the unit and then finding appropriate music and images to accompany their poems.
A modification that could be made would be to allow students who feel uncomfortable reading their own work to pair up with another student and then read each others work. This way students still get practice with dramatic reading and it may take their nerves down a little. This project can be done by one individual or in groups of up to three people.
Students would be required to submit a script and storyboard to the teacher before actually creating the podcast. Upon completion the students would submit the .m4a file to the teacher for posting. Students would then have the option to listen to other students work without having a formal reading situation.

(Pause for a moment)
FEMALE VOICE:
Hello, what is poetry? After weeks of writing, rewriting, and thinking this is what I have come up with as my answer. How would you define it?
The first poem developed out of an unexpected and unlikely turn of events within a friendship I never thought was possible.
Rush
Two thirty am calls
A friend so near
Reappearing
Entering my life much as a twister would
Uprooting previous beliefs
Turning and tumbling
Thoughts and emotions
Running from you is much the same
No way to escape
No place vindicated of your power
You blew into my life
A whirlwind of expression
Haphazardly creating smiles
On an irrational path to my heart
Logic evades you
Though erratic and spontaneous
You are steady and strong as those winds
Which with great force
Brought us together
Spinning a friendship
Strong as a community’s resolve
After the storm |

Chapter 2: Eyes
MUSIC:Start dewdrops.

FEMALE VOICE:
These next two poems are themed around one word. Eyes.
Turquoise eyes
Pierce my soul
Never there but always haunting
Within your sights I feel
Wide open
Nothing hidden
Turquoise eyes see everything
That is me
Brown eyes peering
Always looking
Mine never seeing
But always knowing
Seeing things unknown
Untied ties
Longing for knots
Tangled up tight never to remove
Closure |

Chapter 3: Madness
MUSIC: Start tour bus long.

FEMALE VOICE:
This next poem happened by accident when life started getting crazy in every aspect. I’ve fittingly titled it madness
Newest types of madness
None the same yet never changing
Always there day in day out
Renewing strength with every sighting
Infesting itself in different people
Places
Names
Eyes
Taking a moment to realize my predicament
Taking a moment out of the confusion
For one second everything is clear
Clear like turquoise glass
Clarity still tainted with the madness
Of things I can’t escape |
|
Chapter 4: Run
MUSIC: Start redono beach long.

FEMALE VOICE:
The next set of poems could be about running towards something or running away. I’ll let you decide.
We run to these places in our mind to hide. We run just to get away from things that drive us wild. We run to be free and we run to hide all in the same instance. I’m moving away from you trying to gain perspective of this life. Those eyes that once mesmerized me no longer touch my soul in that way. The clouds are far more fascinating. The sky is an amazing shade of blue and the wind is gently lifting my hair off my face. Things feel too perfect to let something like an unrequited love get in the way. I glance off to my left and see a wave of green ripple across this wide expanse of land. Wide open. This place is all mine at the moment and nothing can take that feeling away from me. Later tonight as I tuck myself into the bed that I once wished you would tuck me into I will remember this feeling of wide openness and relish in the closeness of a blanket and pillow to snuggle up with. This is my place to run away to when things seem too small. This is my place to run to when things seem to painful. Here in my mind the weather is always perfect and I am floating freely.
We float away to these places in daydreams. We smile as our eyes glaze over and thoughts of happier places entrance our minds. We become taken. Nothing short of bliss happens as I drift away to my place. It’s a place where the sun shines down on me and a brook bubbles along as it cuts a winding path along the green grass. It’s a place that doesn’t involve you. That smile that once melted me like chocolate no longer gives me that sweet feeling. The devilish smirk no longer causes a field of butterflies to erupt within. You my dear are a thing of the past and my place is too peaceful to ever be disrupted by the sharp piercing of you voice. No longer melodic in tune is your voice, but rather just white noise that drones on in the background of life. I run. I run to this place a thousand times a day if I need to. I run until I feel that high that comes along with the endurance of it all. I run for me and for no one else. I run to escape you and your haunting images. I run to forget your embrace and the joy it once caused me. You may be my reason for running, but this I cannot believe. When I run nothing matter but the moment. Memories fade.

Chapter 5: Abduction
MUSIC: Start space log.

SOUND EFFECTS: Alien communication and spaceship taking off.

FEMALE VOICE:
This next poem was inspired by an article from Weekly World News and titled Alien Abduction Insurance; Now if You Get Probed by Aliens We've Got Your Butt Covered. The goal of this poem was to that this funny topic and turn it into something more serious. My poem is titled Alien Abduction Insurance
Do you have it
The insurance
Where will you be
When it happens
Your Abduction
Will you be in your home
In Florida, or Kansas
Will you be out of the country
In Italy or Japan
You could be with your children
Playing in the park
You could be caught in rain
At work
At a wedding
At your own wedding
If they come for you
There is no hiding
No escaping
Be prepared to be terrified
For who can say what awaits you
If you never return
Will your funeral be paid for
If you are returned
What condition will you be in
Can you afford the medical attention that you may need
Can you afford the help that you may need
You laugh,
Alien abduction it can’t happen
(Alien Communication)
But it does
It has
Do you care enough about yourself?
About your family to make sure
That you are covered with alien
abduction insurance (alien impact)
When will you be
When it happens
To you |

Chapter 6: Onward
MUSIC: Start soaring.

MUSIC STOPS

FEMALE VOICE:
What does the future hold? What happens when present and future meet. This is titled onward
Lying ahead
Fate pulls us into the unknown
We are headed into a world unlike any other
I’m told it’s more real than where I live now
Where things are different
Where I’ll have to learn to accept
This thing they call life
Where nothing is easy
And nothing is free
Where everything is different
Where there is no more you and me
But how do I close this chapter
When I thought we’d be friends forever
When I care so deeply that I cannot bear to tell my heart
That it is time to move on
That it is time to live
How do I remember you without feeling the emptiness
Of a thousand memories that we have yet to make
Lying ahead in the unknown
Is a choice
A choice of freedom and forgiveness
A choice to cherish or a choice to forget
I will remember you
Because you have shaped me in ways I can never forget. |

Chapter 7: Feeling
MUSIC: Start investigation long.

MUSIC CONTINUES

|
FEMALE VOICE:
The last poem of the night is a feeling.
I hope you feel it.
Grasp it
Reach
Hug it
Hold it, own it
Don’t let it slip
Between your fingers
Like raindrops (raindrops)
Cup your hands tightly, make a seal
Protect it for it can be fragile
Be gentle though
Don’t damage the wings
Let it flutter (butterflies)
In turn your heart will do the same
Crush it, smother it and watch
It withers like a flower in winter
Brushed by frost, heavy
Weighted
Cherish the moments that float (bubbles)
Rising up like tiny bubbles
Bursting to the surface. Meet it
With arms
To hold it
Eyes open
Realize it’s presence (flower)
Even in the winter flower can thrive again
Grasp the hope that lives
Happiness |

Chapter 8: Closing
MUSIC: continues for 5 seconds before stopping |
FEMALE VOICE:
I hope you have enjoyed my creations; have you defined poetry for yourself? |
