Soils in the study area include two soil map units.  Kert Loam (KeA, 0-3% slope, Capability Class IIw-3) occurs in low landscape positions north of Old Highway 12.  In some particularly low-lying or concave positions profiles in this area exhibit characteristics more like Vesper Loam (Ve, 0-2% slopes, Capability Class IIIw-3).  Boone-Plainbo Complex (BoE, 12-45% slopes, Capability Class VIIs-9) occurs on the bedrock-controlled uplands south of Old Highway 12.  In some convex slope positions profiles exhibits textural characteristics more like Boone (sand) and in others exhibits textural characteristics more like Plainbo (loamy sand).  In some concave slope positions profiles exhibit considerably more complexity, loamier textures, greater B-horizon development, and evidence for profile truncations or additions from upslope.  These profiles look more like Eleva Sandy Loam (ElD2, 12-20% slope, Capability Class IVe-7).

Soils in the study area are compatible with different types and intensities of recreational land use.  Steeply sloping, sandy, erosion-prone Boone-Plainbo Complex soils are not good for campgrounds, picnic areas or golf courses.  They are best suited for forest cover and walking and hiking trails composed of stones or wood chips.   Kert Loam is suitable for a much wider variety of recreational use including: playgrounds, trails, campgrounds, and picnic areas.  An exception is low-lying areas within the Kert Loam that appear more like Vesper soils.  These areas are flood prone or subject to seasonally high water tables, poorly drained, and have bad "trafficability" and should not be developed for intensive recreational uses.  We recommend the following recreational land-uses;  steep slopes left as forested "natural" areas with the addition of some trails; restricting intensive recreational development to areas mapped as Kert loam, excepting those lower, wetter Vesper-like subareas.

Soils mapped as Boone-Plainbo Complex exhibit properties not suitable for industrial and commercial construction.  Steep slopes, weakly cemented bedrock 1.5-3.5 feet from the surface, low water holding capacity, and high permeability are all factors that severely limit construction options.  Access road construction will be difficult and traffic accessibility will be greatly limited.  These areas are not suited to excavations for underground pipe, sewer, phone, and electrical lines because of inadequate resistance to sloughing and oversteepened slopes.  Furthermore, the highly erosion-prone Boone-Plainbo Complex soils have a low water-retaining capacity and rapid permeability, so removal of vegetation during construction will greatly increase erosion during construction.  We can recommend no industrial or commercial construction on these soils. 

The Kert loam area is better suited to certain kinds of construction.  These soils are located on level to gentle slopes that are slightly permeable.  Therefore, erosion is not a major factor.  However, water table and bedrock depths are 1-3.5 feet below surface, which severely limits the type of construction in these areas.  We recommend not constructing buildings that require underground facilities, deep foundations, or extensive septic systems because of the high water tables.
