Bradizza, C. (1998). New study will assess drug coping skills of dually diagnosed individuals.

Although behaviorally-oriented approaches have previously worked to teach general life skills to those with mental illness, no studies have been proven this to be true of those dealing with substance abuse as well. Considering that individuals with mental illness are more likely to have a substance abuse problem, the findings to this study could build the foundation for new types of research. Music therapy has been effective in both clients with a mental illness and those with substance abuse problems and could be a factor in this mode of treatment. Not only could music be used to help teach coping skills to the dually diagnosed, but it may also help in the prevention of substance abuse for the mentally ill.

Cognitive-Behavioral Coping Skills Therapy Manual. (1998).

Cognitive-Behavioral therapy "views drinking behavior as functionally related to major problems in the patients life." The purpose of this therapy, then, is to teach the client to be able to cope in these situations. Music Therapy could be useful in this therapy to help modify the behavior of the client and teach them how to cope.

Holder, James, Williams, & Thurman. (1998). Perceptual Adjustment Therapy: A Positive Approach to Addictions Treatment.

This treatment combats the negative approach perceived in current treatment programs that focuses on what the patient is not able to do. PAT looks at patients’ perceptions and how to modify them. This therapy uses early memories as a guide to the patients’ beliefs in order to get their "positive intents" - what they really want to fulfill in life. Music therapy could be used in this technique by building on that basis to create self-esteem and optimism for their future. Music therapy can help to put the patients’ underlying beliefs into the here and now, making them more attainable.

Motivational Enhancement Therapy Manual.

This therapy is based on motivational psychology and is designed to give a "motivational change" in problem drinkers. It does not, however, try to take the patient step by step through therapy. Rather, it gives "motivational strategies" to let them initiate the change. Music, in this setting, could be an effective strategy for those with a musical aptitude by giving them a creative outlet to express themselves without the use of any substance.

Kindross, I. (1998). Many Prevention Policies Not Baccked by Research.

Although what works in alcohol abuse prevention is generally known, Kindross notes that not much of it is backed by research. There are three major types of prevention options cited in the article: environmental, educational, and individual. Music therapy could very easily be a force in both the educational and individual aspects. In education music may be used as a tool to teach others about the dangers of alcohol. Music therapy may be used during the individual sessions of treatment to develop an awareness of the vicious cycle of addiction and to help develop relapse prevention strategies.
