A-Z List
Sex Addictions
Annotated Journals
Bireda, Martha R. , Ph.D. ; Love Addictions. New Harbinger Publications, Inc. ; California, 1990.
I have included this book because it focuses on the addiction of love, and gives a complete understanding of the addiction of love and how encompassing it can be. This book is written to help those in bad
relationships, to help balance out their lives, and to change the thinking and behavior of a person in an unhealthy relationship.
Daley, Dennis C. ;
Kicking Addictive Habits Once and for All. Lexington Books; Massachusets, 1991.
I have included this book because I think that it is a very interesting and helpful tool for people who are attempting to recover from an addiction but might be having problems with relapse prevention. This book was written to help people with sexual addictions as well as alcohol, drug, gambling, and overeating addictions, and explains the many similarities that all of these addictions share.
Earle, Ralph H. , and Earle, Marcus R. ;
Sex addiction: case studies and management. Brunner-Mazel; New York, 1995.
This book is included in the research because it provides a complete explanation, history, and description of theories about sex addiction. The book includes a description of the cycle of sex addiction, and the different forms of treatment that are presently being used to help addicts presently. The book is also interesting in that it also talks about family therapy and how sex addiction can effect the rest of the family of someone who is addicted.
Griffen-Shelley, Eric. ;
Adolescent Sex and Love Addicts. Praeger; Connecticut, 1994.
I included this book because it gives an in-depth description and explanation about the problems of sex addiction in adolescents. I felt this book was interesting and very unique in that it deals with sex and
love addiction, but only in cases of adolescents and not adults. I think that this is important because this age group is commonly overlooked when dealing with this issue.
Hecker, Lorna A. ; Trepper, Terry S. ; Wetchler, Joseph L. ; and Fontaine, Karen L. ; "
The Influence of Therapist Values, Religiosity and Gender in the Initial Assessment of Sexual Addiction By Family Therapists"; The American Journal of Family Therapy, Vol. 23, No. 3, Fall 1995. pg. 261-271.
This article was included because it was an experiment that used sex addicts and their therapists to study whether the gender or how religious a client was, or the values of the therapists themselves had any
influence upon the assessment of the clients by the therapist. I believe that this article is interesting and helpful in how sex addicts are viewed and treated by therapists.
Marwick, Charles; "
Leaving Concert Hall for Clinic, Therapists Now Test Music's 'Charms' "; JAMA, January 24/31, 1996.
I felt that this article is very interesting because it gives a background description on music therapy and how it is changing from a medical standpoint. I think the article is interesting because it comes from a non-musical based source, and not from music therapists themselves, but still believes in the uses of music in the therapy of people with both psychological and physical disorders.
Miller, William R. ;
The Addictive Behaviors. Pergamon Press; New York, 1980.
I included this book because it not only covers sex addiction, but covers the topic of addiction as a whole, showing the "common ground" between all addictions, however different they may actually seem to people. This large book also explains different kinds of treatment that can be used for the benefit of a person recovering from an addiction.
Schneider, Jennifer P. , M.D. , and Burt. ;
Sex, Lies, and Forgiveness. HarperCollins Publishers ; New York 1991.
I think that this book is interesting in that it is written by a married couple recovering from sexual addiction. Sections of the book are written by one of the two authors explaining their personal feelings
and what they went through while dealing with a sexual addiction. I feel that this book is helpful and very insightful about what really is happening in a sexual addiction.
Shiff, Nathan A., M.D. ;
Diary of a Nymph. Lyle Stuart; New York, 1961.
I included this book because of how unique it is in that it actually is the diary of a person with an addiction to sex. Reflections about the woman's journal entries are written by the therapist who was helping her. This is a very old book, but I feel that what it contains does not change with time, although how others view the problem has changed greatly.
Speziale, Bette A., "
Marital Conflict versus Sex and Love Addictions"; Families in Society, October 1994. pg. 509-512.
This article is included in this list because it explains how in the past decade, sexual addiction is starting to be treated as a serious problem, with programs being set up to help that closely resemble treatment for
other addictions such as drugs and alcohol. This article also ties sex addiction to other addictions in a case study where the subject is an alcoholic, but also is afflicted with an addiction to sex.
