Behavioral Issues

Internet Address: http://www.oslc.org

The topic of this website is the social interaction of children with parents and therapists in a variety of settings, including the playground, classroom, therapy room and others. The purpose of the study is to identify predictors of anti-social behavior and either intervene or prevent the development of anti-social disorder. Certain “codes” describe the observed behavior of the research subject, in a situation such as family dinner for example, and these observations have occurred since the mid 1960’s. By identifying the early warning signs of anti-social behavior, music therapists can target the disorder before it fully develops into the symptom patterns associated with the disorder in its later stages. Treating the children with at risk-behaviors allows a music therapist to implement preventive and interventive measures.

First, log onto this main page. Second, click on the “Search unCover” link. No password is needed here, so simply click on the top link, “Search UnCover Now.”  Finally, type in words or phrases, such as “anti-social personality disorder,” to find a collection of information on the particular aspect being researched. After browsing through articles, one will find new ideas for treatments, including how to use music in them. This could be especially useful in specific case studies or with a client whose withdrawn/anti-social behavior is interfering with treatment.

This is the main website of the National Coalition on Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity. This site has everything from papers and articles to dates and location for conferences. Although an indirect relationship to anti-social personality disorder, this page may be useful to the music therapist by exploring how loneliness is linked to sexual addiction and sociopathic behavior. The music therapist may then treat the loneliness as the core problem, or learn how to identify and treat the underlying difficulties of a particular patient. This helps address sociopathy more as a disease with symptoms that can be broken down and treated a piece at a time.
