MUSIC THERAPY MAJOR ADVISING INFORMATION

1. REQUIRED CONCERT ATTENDANCE

Concert punch cards are issued in the Music and Theatre Arts Office. All Music Therapy majors are required to attend ten concerts each semester for seven semesters with no fewer than seventy concert attendances prior to graduation. Only two punches/semester may be diamond punches (punches for events in which the student participated). Your name must be on the card in order to receive a punch. Students must bring the concert attendance card to all concerts for which they wish to receive credit. Credit will only be given for attendance at concerts with both an in and out punch. Do not lose the attendance card; it is the only record of attendance. Students who do not attend ten concerts during a semester can make them up in succeeding semesters; however, students may not accumulate concert attendance in advance of any semester. Students will not be permitted to graduate without fulfilling the concert attendance requirement.

Note for transfers: Transfer students and those returning for specific certification in an area of music education must attend ten concerts each semester they are on campus.

Helpful hints:

  • Get a concert buddy and decide which concerts you will go to together.
  • Go to concerts earlier in the semester when you don’t have as much class work or practicing/rehearsing.

2. REQUIRED PERFORMANCE CLASS ATTENDANCE

Performances classes are special outside of class concerts that are held about five or six times a semester. They are held on specific Wednesdays at 10-10:50 AM in Gantner Concert Hall in HFA. You will get a program for that concert as well as an additional half piece of paper on which to write your NAME, Blugold ID#, and DATE of the performance class. You MUST hand it in immediately after the performance; otherwise, you will NOT receive credit for that performance class. Music Therapy majors must attend Performance Class for seven semesters. For each absence from Performance Class, students are required to attend one concert in addition to the regular concert attendance requirement. Students arriving at Performance Class after the second performer appears on stage will be considered absent. Students are responsible for securing attendance cards before Performance Class begins and turning them in at the conclusion of class. Cards will not be accepted late.

Note for transfers: Transfer students will be assigned a pro rata requirement by the Department
Chair.

3. GRANTS

Grants are for people who are able to stay ahead with submission of assignments and work independently without needing assistance. Students who engage in grants also need expertise in computer design of research data presentation in programs such as Adobe Illustrator or Power Point. Grants add a heavy load of work to your semester as well as break times.

4. TESTING OUT OF THEORY

While most students who have tested out of theory do NOT recommend it, if you really feel you want to test out of theory, you need to take the Theory Placement Exam given by the Department of Music and Theatre Arts on the audition dates immediately preceding your first semester of courses.

MUSIC THERAPY REQUIREMENTS NOT MET IN CLASS WORK

1. PERSONAL PROFESSIONAL GROWTH PLANS (PPGS)

The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) requires that each student track completion of each AMTA professional competency. Each student is required to submit a legal and binding contract as a part of the internship application in which the status of each professional competency is documented. Beginning with MUTX courses in the first semester, each student is responsible for maintaining this documentation. Please click on or visit the link below to print off a copy of these competencies and begin to chart your progress. http://www.musictherapy.org/competencies.html

Prior to meeting with your faculty advisor during your first semester on campus, you need to develop a plan for when you will take each MUTX course as well as other required courses. While it takes some time to map out this plan, it is extremely important to prepare it during your first semester because most of your required courses have prerequisites and are only taught in certain semesters. (Example: Only in Fall, only in Spring, only in odd or even years, or only every four semesters).

If you have an area of weakness or an area of strength which is a special interest, you may work with your faculty advisor to develop directed studies courses and possibly participate in research grants.

2. STUDYING ABROAD

Scheduling your study abroad during summer will enable you to complete course work in four years and be ready to begin your internship at the end of that time. If you choose to study abroad during either the Fall or Spring semester, please note that you will be one full year behind in completing your courses due to the prerequisites and course rotation schedule. However, every student who has ever chosen to do this has found it is very much worth it.

UNIVERSITY GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

1. WELLNESS

Wellness requirement is already met in your program through IDIS 260.

2. SERVICE LEARNING

Service Learning requirement is already met in your program through MUTX 449.

3. CULTURAL DIVERSITY

My plan for Cultural Diversity is met through these 3 diversity credits:

  • MUSI 225 for 1 diversity credit (1 of the 2 credits in this course counts toward diversity.)
  • MUTX 298 for 1 diversity credit
  • MUTX 312 for 1 diversity credit (1 of the 2 credits in this course counts toward diversity.)

PLEASE NOTE THAT DIVERSITY IS NOT THE SAME AS FOREIGN CULTURE. EACH OF THESE REQUIREMENTS IS A SEPARATE REQUIREMENT.

4. FOREIGN LANGUAGE OR FOREIGN CULTURE

My plan for Foreign Language or Foreign Culture is: _________________________

If I choose Foreign Language, I need to complete through the second course in that language. I could complete a 101 or 102 Foreign Language course plus 6 credits in foreign culture courses to meet this requirement.

If you have already tested out of a foreign language, you may still need to take a GE 1A course. Check your degree audit to see if you were given credit for the course under category GE 1A or if you were simply given credit for the foreign language competency but no course shows for GE 1A, in which case you will need to take a GE 1A course. In this case you have met the foreign language competency but did not complete the GE 1A requirement.

If I choose Sign Language, it will count to fulfill my Foreign Language requirement but it will NOT count to fulfill GE category IA requirement. I will need to take a three credit course in GE IA and in addition will need to complete all three 3 credit courses (9 more credits) of Sign Language, meaning that I am taking a total of 12 credits to fulfill the GE IA and Foreign Language requirements:

CDIS 101, 102, and 103 (previously CDIS 301, 302, and 303)

If I choose Foreign Culture, I need 9 credits:

MUSI 225 = 2 credits of Foreign Culture

plus

I can meet the Foreign Culture requirement by choosing GEOG 111 and ANTH 161 in GE III
and HIST 102 in GE IV C. Each of these courses count 3 credits in Foreign Culture.

Point of interest:

Some international courses abroad or life experience may also count.

GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. GE I A my plan is:
    _________________________
GE I B my plan is:
_________________________ (MATH 104 or higher if have not tested out)

  2. GE II, I need BIOL 151 plus 2 other courses for a total of at least 9 credits across the 3 courses, with at least one of the courses not having a BIOL prefix.

In addition to taking BIOL 151 my plan is:
    ______________________________
    ______________________________

  3. GE III, I have:

    Psyc 100 3
    Soc 101 3
    Soc elective 3
  4. GE IV, I need 9 credits. In my degree requirements I will be receiving the following GE IV credits:

    IDIS 103 2
    IDIS 260 2
    MUSI 225 2

Any 3 courses of these combinations to count as 3 credits:
    MUSI 180, 181,182,184,186,188,190,191,192,193

    Or from these combinations:
    MUSI 380,381,382,384,386,388,390,391,392,393

This gives you the required 9 credits in GE IV without you having to take elective classes.

In addition to these credits, you may count the following credits toward your required 39 total GE credits:

If you take MUSI 106 2 credits
If you take MUSI 108 2 credits
If you take MUTX 116 2 credits

    UPPER DIVISION COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

    39 Total

    PSYC 334 3
    PSYC 351 3

    MUTX 344 3
    MUTX 345 1
    MUTX 346 4
    MUTX 349 1
    MUTX 449 6

TOTAL NUMBER OF GE CREDITS REQUIRED:

    39 Total across five categories

    IDIS 103 2 <
    MUSI 225 2
    IDIS 260 2
    MUTX 340 3
    GE IA 3 – 4
    GE I B 3 – 4
    GE II 9
    GE III 9
    GE IV 9

    EXCESS CREDITS SURCHARGE:

The UW-System has implemented a policy, effective Fall Semester 2004, wherein a student who earns 165 credits or 30 credits above and beyond those specified by the degree program (whichever is higher) will be required to pay a surcharge equal to instate per credit fees for all attempted credits thereafter (doubling the cost). This applies to Wisconsin residents who are earning a baccalaureate degree and who have accumulated non-degree seeking, post-baccalaureate, nor out-of-state students. Credits earned through testing, such as the CLEP exam, are also not included. There is an appeal process for students in some situations above. Please see your advisor or department chairperson.
