How to Apply for Graduation

Anticipate when your internship will be done and list your graduation date for the end of the semester following completion of your internship. For example, if your internship will end in March, you would apply for a May graduation date.

You may apply to walk in a ceremony that is earlier – example: if you want to walk at the ceremony in the semester in which you complete all other course work (your last semester on campus).

Please note that any problems in your degree audit must be taken care of prior to applying for permission to walk early. Specifically, you must be enrolled in any courses needed to graduate other than the internship, with those courses actually in progress for the semester, and any substitution forms, waiver forms, or consults must have been filed and approved.

Why did I get a message from the Registrar saying I don't have all of the courses I need to graduate when I know I have taken the required courses?

Most likely you haven't completed all of your substitution forms. A substitution form may be picked up from the Music and Theatre Arts Department office or the Arts and Sciences Dean's office. This form will show any courses that you took which are being used for subsitutes for the courses actually listed in your degree audit.

Also, all concert attendance and music proficiency exams must show as completed.

How do I apply to walk at the graduation ceremony before my internship?

Information found in the University Catalogue under Graduation Requirements: (http://www.uwec.edu/registrar/catalogues/index.htm)

Candidates for graduation are encouraged to attend commencement ceremonies, which are held three times during the calendar year: at the close of the fall and spring semesters of the academic year, and at the close of the summer session. Caps and gowns must be worn by all graduates.

In order to participate in a commencement ceremony, students must file an application for graduation and must meet at least one of the following conditions: (1) completion of all requirements for the bachelor's or master's degree, or (2) current enrollment in the courses necessary to complete all requirements, or (3) completion of all degree requirements with exception of a mandatory internship or other field placement course requiring no more than six credits. Students who will complete all requirements for the degree during the first Three-Week Summer Session are August graduates, but may request permission to attend the May commencement ceremony. Students completing all requirements for the degree in January may attend the December ceremony.

Information from a recent graduate:

"Email the Registrar's Office explaining that you understand that you still have outstanding graduation requirements (aka the internship) and that you just want to walk at the ceremony at the end of whatever semester you're ending university coursework. They'll send you an email saying something to the effect of "You have been given permission to attend the commencement ceremony since all course requirements are in progress with the exception of the required internship."

Apply for graduation as per the instructions in the "You are a senior, please apply for graduation" emails, but instead of the date you're walking, put in the soonest graduation date AFTER you will finish your internship. This allows them to process your diploma correctly."

If you have any more questions, please contact the Registrar's Office in Schofield 128 or your advisor.

Do I have to wait until graduation to take the certification exam?

No. You do not need to wait until your graduation is official to take the certification exam. The CBMT office staff will contact your internship supervisor and your university program director to confirm that you have completed all course work and are elligible to take the exam.
