Disk Space Limits

Disk resources for all our campus needs are budgeted for and so we've implemented a base limit for the files in your Web space. This not only helps us conserve our disk space and the amount we spend to back it up, but it also protects from one person filling the space on the server and causing problems.

Web sites typically take very little space. We feel that 100 MB is adequate for most needs. Here are some tips that will help you use the space responsibly:

  • Images should be optimized to take up as little file size as possible (in general, .gif, .jpg, .png format scaled to size as needed)
  • Don't store resource files (e.g., Word documents from which Web pages were created, Photoshop PSD or TIFF files) in this space - just those that are linked to from your pages meant for the public to see
  • Clean your site periodically. Remove pages, images and other files that are no longer needed

You will receive a single warning by e-mail when your disk space reaches 85% of the limit. If you exceed your limit, you will receive a single e-mail message to inform you that your account has been locked. You will not be able to add to or modify any of the files in your web space until you either remove files to bring it under the limit or your request to have your limit increased.

To request to have your limit increased, contact the Help Desk at 836-5711.
