Brucellosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Brucella. These bacteria are normally passed from animals to humans. A number of different species affect sheep, goats, cattle, deer, elk, pigs, dogs, and other vertebrates. Humans who come into contact with infected animals or animal products from an infected animal can become infected.
There are a wide variety of symptoms which are similar to the flu. These symptoms include fever, sweats, headaches, back pains, and physical weakness. Severe infections of the central nervous system or the lining of the heart may occur. The illness can also cause chronic symptoms such as a recurrent fever, joint pain, and fatigue.
