Coding Criteria

The following graphic shows how each of the 993 Web pages chosen by the respondents was coded as one of five levels of hegemony online (middle column). Each Web page was coded according to the type of culture it exhibited (left column) and the type of power exhibited in its architecture (right column). To test intercoder reliability, my ratings of a random sample of 125 of the chosen Web pages were compared to the ratings of these pages by five other coders. The agreement rate was 85% and the Kappa Measure of Agreement was .72 at .0005 significance, which indicates very good intercoder reliability.
