Jeff Specht

Graduation: Spring 2004
Current Employment: I am currently a doctoral candidate in Orchestral Conducting at the U of Minnesota. I'm married to Laura Specht (Hutchens) a 2008 UWEC music education graduate. I'm also the new Music Director of the Crow River Area Youth Orchestra (CRAYO), and am a finalist for Music Director of the Mississippi Valley Orchestra. In May of 2009, I was a finalist candidate for the position of Assistant Conductor for the Minnesota Orchestra.
Time at Eau Claire: I look back at my time at Eau Claire with great fondness and gratitude. As someone who has experienced many different grad schools and has auditioned/worked in the professional circuit, I can say that my education from UWEC has been quite thorough. I have always felt that I have been well prepared to handle any situation be it working with conservatory students or professional musicians, or in advanced musical studies in graduate school. This is largely due to the many opportunities that I received at UWEC that have been extremely important to my growth as a musician. My advice to anyone at EC or who will be attending is to seek our every opportunity you can. Play in everything whether it's paid or not, work with children, collaborate on projects, take extra theory classes, etc. You never know how beneficial those types of things will be to your growth and to your resume.
