Location: Zion National Park, UT.
Date: March 12, 2007

Entering Zion National Park from the east, on highway 9 you pass many striking landforms and evidence of the vast sand sea that once existed in this area.  One feature that is not readily noticed by most visitors is the stunning fossilized dune located a few miles into the park on the left side of the highway.  These cemented dunes record the evolution of the particular part of the dune field that once existed.

A look at the cemented dune

This dune was located within a basin and as the wind blew the sand it migrated from the left side of the picture below to the right.  Imagine the rock in three dimensions and as an active migrating dune and suddenly a picture is revealed of the active processes that could have created this feature.
