Lightning Strike Frequency Hazard Map

This is a hazard map of the number of lightning strikes distributed world wide.  The data was collected using Optical Transient Detector (OTD) and the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) which were flown in low orbit around the earth.  This allows data collection in low populated areas and the ocean, which were poorly sampled due to the ground-based lightning detectors that were previously used.  Notice the high concentrations in Central Africa and Florida and the particularly low concentrations on the ocean.
