The U.S. government recognizes over 500 Indian tribes, most of which have reservations west of the Mississippi River. [Map source: US Census] Which state has the most reservations east of the Mississippi River? Although Indians are now concentrated in only a few places and represent only 0.6 percent of the U.S. population, Indian cultures, in popular commercial forms and authentic forms, are visible throughout the country.
