McCain's health care plan calls for a reform of the current system by:

  • Putting the individual in charge of their health care.
  • Providing access to health care for everyone, whether temporarily uninsured from unemployment or chronically uninsured.
  • Allowing for veterans to choose what health care program they want their VA dollars spent.
  • Promoting competition of private and public health care

McCain's health care plan would improve health care coverage by:

  • Providing a $2,500 tax credit ($5,000 for families) in order to increase motivation for individuals to get coverage.
  • Allowing individuals and families to purchase health insurance nationwide and/or through various organizations and associations (churches, businesses, professional associations, etc.)
  • Dedicating federal research on the basis of sound science.
  • Reforming Medicare's payment systems
  • Giving states flexibility in their choice of their health care options for their residents.
  • Promoting the conversion over to 21st century information systems instead of paperwork.
  • Allowing the importation of drugs from other developed countries and the use of generic drugs to drive down costs and promote competition.
  • Eliminating frivolous lawsuits and excessive compensation in order to provide a safe environment for doctors to practice medicine and patients to receive exceptional medical care.

McCain's health care plan also stresses personal responsiblity in order to reduce obesity and diabetes.
