Course
Description
This is an introductory course about the
fundamentals of data communications and networking. We will discuss informa=
tion
representation, OSI model, network topologies, transmission medium, computer
hardware and operating systems (OS), TCP/IP networking models, and mainstre=
am LAN
and WAN technologies. The OSI=
model
is used as a framework to organize and discuss the network technologies. Th=
e managerial and ethical aspects of =
data
communications and networking will also be discussed. Major topics to be
covered in this class include:

ation,
concept of data
communications, LAN/MAN/WAN/BN;

A
computer hardware component. This will include hands-on practices on comput=
er
configurations, troubleshooting, and performance monitoring and upgrading;<=

A
computer operating systems component. This will include OS installations, f=
ile
systems, file sharing and security, and basic active directory management.<=
/span>

Transmission media;
·
OSI networking model;=
·
TCP/IP network model,
TCP/IP protocol anatomy and IP addressing system;

LAN technologies, inc=

topologies, standards

Wireless LAN (WLAN) technologies;

Internetworking
technologies, including hubs, bridges, switches and routers;

Course
Objectives

To familiarize students with the
fundamentals of data communications, computer hardware and OS, OSI reference model and other networking
models;

To develop a working knowledge of LAN and
WAN technologies including hardware, software, standards and protocols;

and design of data communication network;

aspects of data communications and networking.
About Labs SSS203/205 – Cargill
Telecommunication Lab
The SSS203/205 labs are currently equipped with 33 IBM client workstations, 4 I= BM Netfinity Servers, 3 Cisco 2600 Routers, 4 Cisco Catalyst 3524 Switches and= 3 PIX firewalls. All workstations have Windows XP Professional installed. In-class ands-on practices and demonstrations will be conducted in the labs. Some homework assignments may also require you use the lab facility. Follow= the lab hours to work in the lab. It is unethical to perform any unrelated activities in the labs that may cause damages = or security problems to the lab computers, equipment or other campus networks.= You are expected not to share passwords, files and lab resource with non-class members.

assignment will be accepted but subjected to a penalty of 20% of the possib=

You are advised to save all of your graded assignments till the end of the
semester in case you suspect a recording error has been made.
Quizzes: We
will have announced or unannounced quizzes. No make-ups on quizzes shall be given, because your quizzes w=
ill
be graded right after they are done and the answers will be given out right
away. No excuses will be accepted. However, you are allowed to miss =
up
to two quizzes since two of your lowest quiz scores will be discarded.<=

Exams: There
will be two exams: a mid-term and a final. The final exam will be partially
cumulative.
You should prepare each class by reading assign=
ed
textbook chapters and PowerPoint presentations, or completing exercises. Do=
n't
expect the entire content of each chapter to be covered in class. You are
expected to attend each class and actively participate in class discussions=
. If you are caught cheating on your
homework, quiz, exams or project, you will receive no score or class failure
penalty.

545 Requirements
IS345 is also offered to graduate students as IS 545. Graduate students will be expected= to perform extra work conforming to their higher standing. This will be discussed and determi= ned between 545 students and the instructor.
