Interest Survey

Colleen McFarland, Special Collections Librarian, and Kati Tvaruzka, Education Librarian, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's McIntyre Library are teaming up to help local middle and high school teachers facilitate successful and meaningful National History Day curriculum and projects. As many of you know, UW-Eau Claire hosts the National History Day Northwestern Regional Competion and the librarians hope to get more involved in the front-end of the preparation by working closely with teachers and students. We would like to implement this program at the start of the2008 school year.

Some of our ideas for services and support that McIntyre Library could offer NHD teachers and students include:

  • Traveling
  • Instructional Web pages providing advice on:
    • choosing viable topics
    • using McIntyre Library research resources
    • using archives and manuscripts material
    • understanding basic historical research concepts (primary / secondary sources, etc.)
  • Web and print bibliographies matching young adult fiction interests to historical research topics
  • Classroom instruction by Education Librarian and Special Collections Librarian on doing NHD research and using the library
  • Library tours / on-site instruction by Education Librarian and Special Collections Librarian (potential grant funding for transportation to and from school)
  • Reference and research support for NHD students
    • History day help desk in McIntyre Library on evenings and weekends from November – February, including telephone, instant messaging, email, and in-person help.
    • Research appointments in Special Collections on evenings and weekends (personalized research help with archives and manuscripts)
  • Possible in-service presentation for teachers on NHD and McIntyre Library
  • Possible NWEA Conference presentation on NHD and McIntyre Library
  • Prize for best research project using McIntyre Library history resources
