IMC Weeding Criteria
Condition: Items in poor conditions that are beyond reasonable preservation efforts
Age: Is it so old that the resource's information has lost value?
Frequency of Use:
Anything from 1998 and older that has fewer than 5 circs/browses needs serious consideration
If the item is old, but gets relatively high usage, it indicates that the need is there, but current content is not. Try to find a newer title with similar, but updated, content.
Currency/Accuracy: Is the content current and accurate? Are there enough other books on the topic to warrant weeding a particular title? In other words, withdraw, but do not replace! Those weeding in the sciences and geography sections need to pay close attention to this.
Multiple Copies: Withdraw duplicate copies unless a proven demand exists. If you on the fence about an item, check the Voyager catalog to see if other UW campus libraries own the title. UWEC users could then access via Universal Borrowing, making your decision easier - get rid of it!
Superseded editions: Weed any superseded editions that do not contain unique information, data, or provide a historical reference not available in the most current edition.
Children's Catalog: If a title is included in this master list, you should keep it. This book will be kept outside of Kati's office throughout this project. Return it when you are finished.
Use these sites to check for replacements or new and updated editions of the books that you withdraw from the IMC's children's nonfiction collection:
Books In Print (Bowker) - large Web-based bibliographic resource for professionals
TitleWave (Follett) - you each should have a log-in and password assigned to you
TitleTales (Book Wholesalers, Inc.) - BWI is a book and audiovisual vendor for public libraries with special emphasis on children's and young adult materials (log in: tvaruzke, password: ellaanna)
