Using the Online Catalog
Use the Voyager Online Catalog to locate books and other media at McIntyre Library as well as other UW libraries (through Universal Borrowing or Interlibrary Loan if the material is not available through the UW system). Search Tips:
- Use a builder search to do more advanced searching
- Set limits if you want only certain materials or items from certain collections
- When you find an item that looks really good, cross search its subject headings to get to other similar materials.

Database list - the library has access to over 140 different databases!

- Search only one database at a time (click on the name of the database)
Don't EVER limit to full-text! Use theoption instead.
- Academic Search Elite - a general academic index that indexes almost 3,000 magazines and journals from every academic discipline.
- Reader's Guide Full Text - Indexes general-interest periodicals published in the United States and Canada, with some full text for selected periodicals. Topics covered: general, contemporary issues, news, current events, biography, popular topics, travel, hobbies, sports, entertainment, and politics.
- Social Sciences Full Text - periodicals and journals in the social sciences. Topics covered: anthropology, area studies, community health, criminology, economics, environment, ethics, ethnic studies, family studies, gender studies, geography, international relations, law, planning & public administration, policy sciences, political science, psychology, social work, sociology, and urban studies.
- CQ Researcher: Reports on current, controversial issues. Summarizes the current debate and gives sources of information and suggestions for further research. This is an excellent resource for getting an overview of current hot topics. Not necessarily for detailed regional information, but a great place to get ideas for your paper. - Newspapers in Print: a list of the newspapers we subscribe to in print. You will find these on the 2nd floor.
- ProQuest Newspapers - Full text of 300+ U.S. and international news sources including 150+ newspapers. Some of the titles covered are the New York Times, the Times of London, the Chicago Sun Times, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and the Wisconsin State Journal.
- ProQuest Wisconsin Newsstand: Select Wisconsin newspapers online, including Corporate Report Wisconsin ( Menomonee Falls); The Daily Reporter (Milwaukee); La Crosse Tribune; Madison Capital Times; Current Marketplace (Appleton); Marshfield News Herald; Milwaukee Journal Sentinel; Kenosha News; Northeastern Wisconsin Business Review (Neeah); Rhinelander Daily News; Wausau Daily Herald; Wisconsin State Journal.
- Lexis Nexis Academic: "News" section contains the full text of U.S. and international newspapers, news transcripts, magazine and journal articles, policy papers, news wires and newsletters.
- Government Publications: Weare a regional depository for state agency publications. This collection consists of approximately 20,000 titles and 50,000 volumes, arranged by a State Historical Society classification system. All Wisconsin documents have been fully cataloged and incorporated into the online catalog. Wisconsin state publications are accessible by standard subject, title and keyword searches. Many Wisconsin State government publications are also available via the Internet.

- Wisconsin Census - WI census data is included with the U.S. census files through FactFinder (a great source for source population, housing, economic, and geographic data)
- Archives and Special Collections: SC&A is different from other library departments because the resources available are extremely rare or unique and irreplaceable. SC&A is a Wisconsin Historical Society Area Research Center (ARC). It holds local government records and manuscripts pertaining to the following counties: Buffalo, Chippewa, Clark, Eau Claire, Rusk, and Taylor. SC&A also collects local history publications, including: city directories, church and organizational histories, county and city histories, and genealogical reference books.
- L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library: Look through the library's local history research pages for access to historic newpapers online, The Virtual Museum of the Chippewa Valley, and the local history database. The local history research page also provides links to several external sites of value for student researchers.
- Wisconsin History Portal provides access to the online collections available through
the Wisconsin Historical Society. These include Turning Points in WI History, Wisconsin Historical Images, Local History & Biography Articles, Wisconsin Name Index, WI Historical Collections, American Journeys, Dictionary of WI History, Wisconsin Magazine of History, Odd Wisconsin, This Day in Wisconsin History, and Roster of WI Volunteers, 1861-1865.
