Welcome! I'm David Leland, assistant professor of psychology at UW-Eau Claire. I teach general and cognitive courses in psychology and neuroscience. My laboratory (CHEEZ) uses electroencephalography (EEG) to study the neural underpinnings of cognition, motivation, and action. 		The CHEEZ uses EGI 64-channel hydrocel geodesic sensor nets for EEG recording and E-Prime for stimulus presentation and behavioral data collection. Projects:

• Incentive Effects on Behavior and ERPs in a Go/Nogo Paradigm with Lottery-type Reward. In this research, we look at event-related brain activity in the electroencephalogram (EEG) associated with attention as participants perform a simple target detection task under conditions of higher vs. lower incentive. We have found, for instance, that the N1 component of the ERP (event-related potential) is larger in response to targets when correctly responding to them gives participants more points and thus better odds of winning a gift card. The N1 reflects enhanced attention, especially when individuals are trying to discriminate between similar but not quite identical stimuli. Since our participants need to distinguish between target and nontarget stimuli that differ in appearance only slightly, it appears that when the stakes are higher this brain component reflects greater attention.
• EEG Response to Alcohol Stimuli as a Function of Drinking Levels. This research focuses on the power spectrum of the EEG (how much power in alpha frequency waves, beta frequency waves, etc.) in response to alcohol stimuli. We are looking to see whether such responses differ in those with higher vs. lower levels of drinking, particularly for frequencies associated with arousal and attention. In preparation for this experimental research, we also conducted a survey of drinking preferences, patterns, and problems in a large sample of UWEC students.

PERSONAL

My  feed focuses on experimentation with food, music, and of course brains. My wife, Adrienne, is an interior designer specializing in kitchens and baths.
