English 284 is a broad-based introduction to the discipline of literary theory, with emphasis upon contemporary critical theory and literary concepts. The goal is to become familiar with critical and theoretical practices in the field of literary study, and learn new ways of examining (and even defining) literary texts and the very concept of textuality itself. Through understanding different theories we question typical assumptions about literature, including its relationship to readers, writers, and critics, as well as to more abstract concepts such as "society," "the canon," and "tradition." |
| The students of Literary Theory and Criticism have compiled, through self-directed research, in-depth interactive web sites about several contemporary literary theories. Their group collaborations have produced different pages for the theories including time lines, definitions, and theorists. Follow the links to view the results of each group's research of the basic theoretical concepts underlying contemporary approaches to literature. | |
"This course is not about learning the "right" way to read literature: it isabout learning new methods for analyzing literature, and learning how to productively apply literary theory to literary and cultural texts." -Dr. JoAnne C. Juett |
