Text Box: Dead Zone Soil Profile

Go to school for 10 years and you’ll still be digging ditches

Here Justin Berg takes a look at the soils in the dead zone to determine if indeed there is a restrictive rooting layer. He believes there is something more going on and the tree fall deals with disease and/or insect infestation. Christina Hupy has gotten interested in the project and wants to examine the tree rings to determine when the trees went down and why. This use of dendrochronology is one of Christina's research interests and promises some great research opportunities  for the students at UWEC.
