Looking to Hill 861

In terms of my research involving the effects of war on the environment, Vietnam is the next ‘big thing’. I travelled there in May of 2007, and came up with several very interesting research topics and theories. This image is a view from what is known as the 581 ridgeline, and I am looking off to the northeast and the summit of Hill 861. (The hills in the area were named very simply, after their elevation in meters.) I took this image the first day out in the field, trying to get to the summit of hill 861. Barely noticeable are several rings on the deforested ridge in the foreground. These are some crater rings, probably left by some 700 lb bombs.
