Text Box: Khe Sanh combat base and surrounding area

Map of the Khe Sahn Battlefield, Vietnam

Researching the effects of war on the environment, with so many battlefield around the world spanning so many years, provides a ‘target rich’ research environment indeed. As a follow up to my research in Verdun, France I am centering my interests on Vietnam. This time around, I have the help of Christina who will be using Remote Sensing and GIS as a tool to examine potential vegetative recovery patterns. My part in the collaborative effort will be on the soil geomorphology and history of the war. Why history? This type of research requires you to know what happened where otherwise, even if you know of a battle, you could be investigating the wrong places on the battlefield. I am working closely with several Khe Sanh veterans on this matter and their help has been incredible. As a follow up to our research, Christina and I hope to help the veterans create a web based GIS that preserves their histories in a spatial format.
