Text Box: Weekend Warrior Colgate Students

Weekend Warriors

These punks are part of a larger group that engaged in a capture the flag event as part of a larger research project in my Senior Seminar at Colgate University. The students engaged in the project were broken up into two teams, defense and offense, and then were provided the location of a given parcel of land in a state forest nearby. The students then used skills, concepts, and tools they learned throughout their career as a geography student at Colgate to predict the intentions of the other side. I allowed the defense to visit the site but the offense was only able to obtain existing and remotely sensed data (Digital Elevation Models, aerial images, soils data, etc.) based on the coordinates provided. After spending about a month analyzing the location, the students then engaged in a day of capture the flag. After the event the students did a post event analysis to see what the missed in their preliminary analysis and what they would have done differently the second time around. Since the focus of the course was military geography, lots of military theory was incorporated into the analysis as well.
