Population Density
- During this social studies unit, students will be learning about population density. Throughout the unit, they will be required to They will examine the effect of land area on the population density. They will use web sites provided to them on the handout in order to find data and place them in an Excel document. The students will use the data and function capabilities of Excel to determine the population density of each state. They will then create graphs in Excel to visualize the data they have found. After they have finished this, the students will answer the questions laid out in the handout.
- Which state has the greatest population density (the most people per square mile)?
- Which state has the lowest population density?
- What does a high population density tell you about a state?
- What region has the highest population density?
- Why do you think your results ended up like this?
- Why should we use the land area of the region to determine population density?
- Could other factors go into the population density that cannot be seen with this data and the graphs you have made?
- Think about the recent natural disasters that have taken place in this country?
- How could this change the data you have?
The student handout and an example spreadsheet can be found on this page. The student handout is a Word document, and the example project is an Excel document.
