EDMT 380-001: DTP Redesign
Fall 2005
Print Material Source
The original print material was a worksheet developed for a lesson plan on probability. I individually developed this lesson plan in Math 305. The only requirement was to develop a worksheet or handout to be sent home with the students after the lesson was taught. There were no guidelines to follow when creating the worksheet.

Redesign Analysis
| Changes | Relation To Textbook Guidelines |
| Title: I aligned the title to the left of the page. I reversed typed the title to make it pop-out from the page. |
Headings/titles guide the reader through the document. It is highly recommended not to use all caps in a title. Capitalizing all the words in a title is also unnecessary, according to the text. I only capitalized the most important words in the title. |
| Font: I changed the font of times new roman to a sans serif font. I used both berlin sans serif and berlin sans serif bold to develop contrast. |
Sans serifs are most commonly used for short lines and titles/headings. Studies have shown that a serif font is better to use for large amounts of text because readers seem to prefer the serif fonts. The text used on the worksheet is mainly short questions and phrases, so as a personal preference I choose to use a sans serif font to give the students some variety. Type 10-14 font is recommended to be used for the main text. I choose to use size 14 due berlin sans serif due to the fact it has a tendency to be a smaller font. |
| Graph: I aligned all the type in the graph to the left. I used different tone shades to separate the headings from where the students are to fill in. |
Text recommends not using unnecessary lines, especially vertical lines. However, with this worksheet the table boxes need to be defined for the students so they can keep their tally marks in the correct places. The column and row headings are bolded and have shading to make them stand out. |
Spacing: |
Proximity was not given any consideration on the original worksheet. Breaking information and grouping them into related units helps the students understand the information more clearly. Breaking the worksheet into two worksheets grouped all the estimation together on one and findings/data on another. |
Boxes: |
Boxes should be used to emphasize important information, define space for writing and contain an illustration, chart, or graph. Create different style boxes by using contrast or varying borders. It is recommended not to use more than three boxes on a page unless the effect is not overdone and there is variety between the boxes. |
Alignment: |
Alignment helps organize a page and make it look more professional. According to the Terrific Training, whenever you possibly can, align everything on the page to something else. I choose to align everything to the left under the title. |
Redesign Summary:
The four design basics: contrast, repition, proximity, and alignment were not taken into consideration when creating the original worksheet. The original document was also created in microsoft word which does not have as many capabilities and features as publisher. After working in publisher, I have seen how a simple worksheet can turn into a work of art by adding graphics, boxes, lines and creating contrast with type, size, or shading. It gives the worksheet an overall professional apperance and also makes it easier for the reader to read and follow.
