DTP: Desktop Publishing in the Classroom

Below is a culminating activity overview which incorporates numerous sub-lesson plans. I provided the overview to give you an idea as to where the student assignment and example DTP project fits into the project as a whole. Other portions of this culminating activity could incorporate the use of desktop publishing. For this assignment, students are to use DTP to create an advertisement for their documentary/movie.

Culminating Activity Overview

Subject: Social Studies/Video Production
Grade Level: 8th

Time Frame:
This project will take at least a semester long for students to complete.

Activity:
Students will be conducting interviews and creating/producing an Imovie, using ILife software programs.

Description:
Students will be receiving a brief presentation on all the issues going to be covered over the course of the semester. Students are to choose an issue which they feel has or had an impact on their life. This will require students to do extensive research so they become very knowledgeable about their issue.

Students will begin the semester learning about all the ILife programs, this way they will have time to hear more about the issues from all the other subject areas and think about which issue affects them the most.

The only main requirement of this assignment is students must interview someone related to their issue and include the interview in some form in their movie. This interview could be parents, grandparents, neighbors, classmates, politicians, anyone who is directly involved in the issue. Students will be taught how to conduct a proper interview, write questions and practice the interviews ahead of time.

After the interview is complete, students will begin to compile their information and make a storyboard script of their movie. Students will exchange storyboards with one another to be critiqued and receive positive feedback. Finally students will be ready to start creating their movie!

At the end of the semester, once the movies are complete students will begin showing their movies in class. Students will present their movie and give a short presentation as to why they choose this issue and include any barriers or new things they learned from their research or interview. Finally, the school will hold an “Issues Conference” where parents and the public will be invited to view the movies created by the students. Students will be present after their movie is shown to answer any questions the public may have. Other projects completed over the course of the semester will also be on display.

Assessment:
Students will have periodic due dates to make sure they are staying on track and progressing with the project. Since so much time will be devoted to learning the software programs, a rubric for technical requirements on the movie will be developed. Students will self assess themselves and receive feedback from peers on their final projects. Using this information, the teacher will give the student a final grade on their movie.

Planned Provisions for Diverse Learners:
Students whose first language is not English may choose to present their movie in their language. All students should be able to participate in this activity, it requires numerous skills such as researching, writing, interviewing, computer skills and it all can be done in a variety of ways. There are no set guidelines, so students can be very creative. Also this project may be done in groups, no more than three people to a group, so that if one person struggles more in one area there is someone to take that part or help their classmate struggling learn. This project requires communication and collaboration with classmates and teachers. Any other accommodations stated in a student’s IEP will be addressed individually with the teacher
